Trusting God amid affliction is easier when we have an accurate understanding of his excellence. Our distrust is often based on a caricature of God, not on who he truly is. God reveals himself to us through nature, our conscience, and the Bible. Nature testifies to God’s existence as well as to his creativity, power, and intelligence. Our conscience affirms God’s holiness and our moral accountability to him. Why trust God? We should trust God because:

His way is perfect – Psalm 18:30 – “As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.” We like to think we know what’s best for us. We have specific needs we want God to meet, and many more wishes we want Him to fulfill. But God is not a genie in a bottle, is He? He is Lord of all creation – Maker of Heaven and earth, sea and sky. And yet, this great God wants to help you have a great life. He wants you to live an abundant life. But that means you have to be willing to follow His ways.

After you get saved, God’s way for your life is perfect. Prov 20:24 says, “Man’s goings are of the Lord…” Ps 37:23 says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord…” Prov 16:9 says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way, but the Lord directeth his steps.” Prov 14:12 says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof is the ways of death.” You and I are not smarter than God. Therefore, go God’s way. Seek his way and he’ll show you how to go and he’ll go with you [Ex 33:12-14]. Trust that the way God is leading you is right and best. The problem here for many Christians is that you don’t want to go “that” way. Don’t wait till you are so far off course that the Lord needs to rescue you. Trust him every single step of the way.

Well, now that we know God’s way is perfect, how do we find out which way it is? Simple, we ask God! Surrender your wishes to Him, and allow His Holy Spirit to lead you. God’s word is flawless – allow His life-giving words to guide your legs. And when you allow God to lead, when you trust His guidance, the Bible says that He will protect you. You need not fear what lies ahead because you are walking in God’s way, and He will be your shield.

His word is pure – “the word of the Lord is tried.” In Ps 12:6-7 we reach that the tried words of the Lord are pure. Ps 119:140 says, “Thy word is very pure…” Prov 30:5 says, “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.” So, trust him because his word is pure and he’ll be a shield unto you. According to Prov 30:6, some men have perverted and corrupted God’s words by adding their own words and interpretations. You can trust God’s words in the King James Bible; they are the only thing pure in this world. Reading the Bible daily will adjust your life a little every day until you die. The Holy Spirit will use his words to conform you to the image of Jesus Christ, feed your soul, direct your steps [Ps 119:105], and purify you. He’ll purify your mind, your heart, your mouth, your actions, and your motives.

God is the source of all truth, purity, holiness, and perfection. So His Word is a direct reflection of whom He is along with how He operates. The Word is the very means through which God reveals Himself, and His ways to mankind. The Word is what gives us some clear insights regarding what’s happening in the unseen world. And it tells us in great detail how the world we’re living in came into being by the Word that came out of His mouth. The Word encompasses the visible world, the invisible world, and eternity. So we’re connected to God who dwells in the unseen realm on the basis of the truth found in His Word. His Word is also the very substance that holds every aspect of our lives steady.

His weapons are powerful – “He is a buckler to those that trust in him.” A buckler is a shield, but a special kind of defensive shield that also has a long metal point as an offensive mechanism so as to not only shield oncoming attacks but also to fend them off as well. This is an analogy of our God because He takes care of all those that trust in him. These bucklers were used as body shields and could be raised as an overhead roof to protect from incoming barrages of arrows and spears. God’s point is that He will not allow the forces of darkness to completely engulf us, as Psalms 18:28 promises, “the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.” God will manifest Himself as our buckler as we look to His way, which is perfect, and we believe the Word of God that is refined to perfection.

We are in a continual battle with our flesh, with the devil and with the world. From the world, we have borne a little reproach, thus far, but we haven’t seen anything, yet. You can see where the world is heading by reading about what the saints endure during the Tribulation. In Rev 11, the whole world will be celebrating the death of the two witnesses. The world hates God and they will hate you if they don’t already. You and I are going to have to trust God to help us navigate through these last days.

Who or what are you trusting right now? Whatever they are, if they are not God, then quit trusting them and start trusting God. I have found that many Christians don’t trust God. You can tell by their actions. Don’t you be one of them? Trust God. His way is perfect, his word is pure and his weapons are powerful.

Christians were never meant to be normal. We’ve always been
holy troublemakers, we’ve always been creators of uncertainty,
agents of dimension that’s incompatible with the status quo; we
do not accept the world as it is, but we insist on the world becoming
the way that God wants it to be. And the Kingdom of God is different
from the patterns of this world.
