HE ONLY

Psalm 62 2

In Ps 62:2 and Ps 62:6, notice the little two-word phrase, “He only.” Those two words sound perfectly exclusive. No one else can compare to the Lord in these things that David said “only” the Lord is.

He only is my rock – Ps 62:2 – He is the rock from which Israel drank water in the wilderness, 1 Cor 10:4. He is the rock upon which the church is built, Matt 16:15-18. He is the rock foundation of the temple of God, Eph 2:19-22; 1 Cor 3:11. He is the stone which the builders rejected who becomes the head of the corner, Matt 21:42. He is a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient, 1 Pet 2:8. He is the chief cornerstone, 1 Pet 2:6-7. He is the stone cut out without hands which smites Nebuchadnezzar’s image and becomes the great mountain that fills the whole earth, Dan 2:34-35.

And David said, “He is my rock.” As a matter of fact, he said, “He only is my rock.” When you have the Lord for your rock, you do not need another. Moses wrote, “For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges,” Deut 32:31. He stands alone as the elect, precious rock.

And He is my rock. From Him comes my living water. I am in His church. He is my foundation. Jesus said that a man who hears His words and does them is like a man who builds his house on a rock. The rains descend, the floods come, and the winds blow on that house and it will not fall. That’s my house because it is built on His rock foundation. Is He your rock?

He only is my salvation – Ps 62:2 – Is 43:11 says, “I, even I, am the Lord; and beside Me, there is no savior.” Jesus Christ is “the” Savior. Matt 1:21 says, “Thou shalt call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins.” Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me,” Jn 14:6. Jehovah’s Witnesses know that Jesus is the Savior. Even Latter-Day Saints teach that Jesus is the Savior.

The trouble is that little word “only.” They do not believe that He “only” is their salvation. They believe that you must earn His gift of eternal life. Therein lies the problem with all religions. They do not believe that “only” Jesus can save you. They believe in their righteousness plus His sacrifice. That won’t work.

David said, “He is my salvation.” As a matter of fact, he said, “He only is my salvation.” David knew that if the Lord wasn’t his salvation he wouldn’t be saved.

And He is my salvation. I trusted Jesus Christ to save me and He did. Nothing I have done or ever could do will save me. He only is my salvation. He is my Savior.

Is He your Savior? When you have Jesus Christ, you are saved and you don’t need any other savior. He gives you eternal life forever.

He only is my defense – Ps 62:2 – you have seen His testimonies of defense in the Bible. He defended Abraham, who, with his 318 trained servants and his friends, Mamre, Eschol, and Aner, defeated four powerful kings from the east who had defeated Sodom Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim, and Zoar. He defended Israel against a powerful attack from Pharaoh, by drowning the entire army in the Red Sea. He defended Israel against five armies under Adonizedek by making the sun and moon stand still.

He defended Gideon with 300 men against 135,000 Midianites. He defended David against Goliath and a host of enemies who attacked Judah and Israel. He defended Hezekiah against Sennacherib who had laid siege against Jerusalem. The angel of the Lord killed 185,000 soldiers in one night. He defended Jehoshaphat and Judah against three armies. No soldier had to fight. The Lord won the battle without them.

David said, “He is a fortress, He is a high tower, He is a shield, and he is a buckler.” When the Lord returns, the heavens will bow, the earth will shake, the hills will move, the mountains will melt, and all the people, great and small, will hide. And David said, “He is my defense.” As a matter of fact, He is the only defense David needed.

And He is my defense. He has given us the whole armor of God. We have better armor than our adversaries, Eph 6. Our Lord has overcome the world. He said, “greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world.” There is no need to fear what man can do to you, Matt 10:28. Even if Satan is standing against you at your right hand, Zech 3:1, he is no match for the Lord. Is He your defense?

He only is my glory – Ps 62:7 – David said, “But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head,” Ps 3:3. In essence, David is saying, “I will glory in Him.” David was the greatest king Israel had. He is the king who will rule when Jesus returns. And yet he did not glory in his accomplishments, but rather in the Lord.

And He is my glory. In 1 Cor 2:26-31 Paul said, “he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” In Jer 9:23-24 we glory not in wisdom, might, or riches, “but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the Lord.” Is He your glory?

He only is my refuge – Ps 62:7-8 – a refuge is a shelter or protection from danger or distress. David sought refuge in Him and God always protected him. David said, “I shall not be greatly moved,” Ps 62:2. Then in Ps 62:6, after considering their bowing wall and tottering fence v.3, and their lies v.4, his expectation v.5, the vanity of degrees v.9, the vanity of oppression and robbery v.10, the uncertainty of riches v.10, compared to the power of God v.11, he said, “I shall not be moved.” David said, “He is the rock of my strength,” v.7.

He is my refuge. No matter the difficulty, no matter the situation, no matter the concern, we need to just seek refuge in the Lord. He only is my refuge.

Is he your refuge? Where do you seek refuge in distress and fear? You have no better refuge than the Lord. Trust in Him at all times, pour out your heart before Him.

Conclusion: If you are not saved, you should trust the Lord, the rock, to save you. He only is the Savior. Only He can save you. During spiritual attacks, He only is your defense. Glory in Him alone. And in distress, seek refuge in Him. Once you have found refuge in Him, you realize that you need no other refuge.
