The Lord Is My Strength

Ps 118:14 has a nice outline built right into the text. The Lord is my strength, my song, and my salvation. This is a very encouraging text for us today. Notice what the Lord is to us.

The Lord is my strength – We need to keep the Lord close at all times so that we can rely upon His strength. The first verse of the song, Just A Closer Walk With Thee, is “I am weak but thou art strong, Jesus keeps me from all wrong, I’ll be satisfied as long, As I walk, let me walk close to thee.”

Paul needed the Lord’s strength to be content in whatsoever state he was in, Phil 4:11. The Lord strengthened him when he was abased, when he was hungry, and when he suffered need. He said in Phil 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Likewise, the Lord will strengthen us.

David needed the Lord’s strength in his old age, Ps 71:9. In Ps 71:16 he said, “I will go in the strength of the Lord God.” Paul taught us to rely upon the Lord’s strength in our spiritual attacks and temptations. He said in Eph 6:10, “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.”

The Lord is my song – Prov 17:22, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” One of the best ways to have a merry heart is to sing a song of praise. There are so many great praise and worship songs to sing. I have seen, over and over again, how singing these songs has made our hearts merry. And a merry heart is beneficial. It works like medicine. Singing is good for your heart and your health. I was praying this morning, God reminded me of a song of worship which when I began to sing, immediately lifted my spirit and settled my mind and my heart.

The Lord is my salvation – Of course, if you are not saved, the Lord is the only one who can save you, Jn 14:6. But He is your salvation, after you have eternal life, in circumstances where you need to be saved. In 1 Tim 1:15, a woman is saved in childbearing when she and her husband continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

In Phil 1:19, Paul believed that the prayers of the Philippians and the supply of the Spirit would turn to his salvation in his bonds. In 2 Cor 11:6, the ministry of consolation is for the salvation of others who are going through what you’ve been through. In every case, the Lord is your salvation. Look to the Lord to get you through and out of every situation in life.

Conclusion: the Lord alone truly is our strength, He is our song, and He is our salvation. Look to the Lord for these three things.

11 Diabetes Dos: Your Type 2 Checklist

Living well with type 2 diabetes requires adopting healthy routines. We spoke with endocrinologist and diabetes educator Anthony Pick, MD, of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital in Illinois, to find out which regular habits he recommends for his patients.

Daily Habits

Aim for smart food choices. To keep blood sugar levels in a healthy range, Pick recommends eating slowly, savoring your food, being attentive to signs of fullness, and choosing nutritious foods. He recommends that patients newly diagnosed with type 2 work closely with a registered dietitian and diabetes educator to create an eating plan designed just for them.

Make sleep a priority. Pick encourages patients with type 2 diabetes to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, and to seek treatment for possible sleep apnea if they snore. “What’s underappreciated is that sleep deprivation and sleep apnea aggravate diabetes,” Pick says. “It leads to cravings for unhealthy food and increased insulin resistance.” It also makes weight loss harder, he adds.

Record blood sugar levels. Testing and recording your blood sugar allows you to see patterns, such as how certain foods or activities affect your blood sugar levels. Your doctor or diabetes educator will tell you how often you should test daily.

Many people use traditional blood sugar meters, which involve testing a drop of blood from your fingertip. But Pick says a growing number of his patients use continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), in which a small sensor placed on the skin of the upper arm measures blood sugar every few minutes and some send the results to your smartphone. This makes it easier to see trends and share information with your doctor.

Avoid sitting for long spells. If you have a desk job that involves sitting all day or you like to binge-watch TV, Pick urges you to get up and move regularly. Research suggests that long periods of sitting are harmful for the heart. “There’s that saying that ‘sitting is the new smoking,’” Pick says. Current exercise guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderately intense exercise a week, or at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. Choose physical activities that you enjoy enough to do regularly.

Peek at your feet. Diabetes can cause nerve damage in your feet, so you might injure your foot but not feel it, causing potentially serious wounds that won’t heal on their own. Examine your feet daily to spot problems.

Several Times a Year

Have your A1c tested. The A1c blood test reveals your average blood sugar level over the last 2 to 3 months. Most people with type 2 diabetes need an A1C test twice a year, although some need it more frequently.

Visit the dentist. Diabetes weakens your body’s ability to fight bacteria, increasing your risk of gingivitis, a condition in which the gums swell and bleed. Left untreated, this inflammation can develop into gum disease and increase your risk of losing teeth. It also worsens glucose control. See your dentist at least twice a year.

Annual Habits

See a diabetes educator. Make this appointment soon after you’re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and return at least once a year. “Study after study shows that when people meet with diabetes educators, they have lower A1c, less diabetes distress, a better understanding of their medications, and better self-management,” Pick says. Certified diabetes educators previously used the initials “CDE” after their names, but beginning this year this is changing to “CDCES,” which stands for certified diabetes care and education specialist.

Get your feet checked. Because type 2 diabetes can impair your ability to sense foot injuries and put you at risk for severe infection, ask your doctor to examine your feet at least once a year.

Visit the eye doctor. Diabetes increases your risk of eye diseases such as retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts. The American Diabetes Association recommends that you have a dilated eye exam soon after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, because 1 in 5 people already have an eye problem when diabetes is diagnosed. Pick encourages patients to repeat this exam annually.

Get a flu shot. Pick recommends that his patients get a flu vaccine every fall; diabetes makes it harder for your body to fight this illness. He also recommends the pneumococcal vaccine to provide protection again pneumonia and related infections.

3 Stress-Busting Habits

Stress raises blood glucose levels and makes it harder to take good care of yourself, says Anthony Pick, MD. He encourages his patients with type 2 diabetes to consider the following habits to reduce stress. 



1. Foster friendships. 

Meeting with pals regularly for tea or a jog keeps you connected and may protect against depression and loneliness, two risk factors for heart disease. 

2. Own a pet. 

Caring for a cat or dog can also keep loneliness at bay. A dog provides the added benefits of getting you outside for walks.



3. Take time in nature. 

Research shows that walks in the woods can decrease stress hormone levels, pulse rate, and blood pressure. They can also boost your mood.

Better Visits

Anthony Pick, MD, suggests 3 ways to improve your next doctor appointment.



1. Set a visiting goal.

Tell the doctor right away what you’d like to accomplish during your appointment. For example, are you having any medication side effects, or do you need help with weight loss?



2. Bring a list of medications. 

Write down what you take, the dose you take, and when you take it. 



3. Write your history.

Pick suggests writing, in your own words, the story of your diabetes and your general health history. Bring a copy for your doctor.

Portland Commissioner Apologizes for Conspiracy Theory About the Police

Portland commissioner seeking control of the city’s police department apologized on Thursday for promoting a conspiracy theory that undercover police officers were the ones setting fires and committing other crimes during recent unrest.

“Sometimes I screw up. And yesterday was one of those days that—it was very emotional, and I made some remarks that were out of the context that I would have liked to put it in,”  Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, a Democrat, said in a virtual press conference.

Hardesty said she left a message with Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell but would have to think about whether Daryl Turner, an officer who serves as president of Portland’s police union, “deserves a phone call.”

“I’ll probably take the weekend and call him Monday, assuming things go well this weekend,” she said.

Hardesty issued a lengthy statement on Wednesday in which she apologized for “using unfounded claims and misinformation.”

Earlier in the day, she said at a virtual event: “I want people to know I do not believe that there are any protesters in Portland that are starting fires, that are creating chaos.”

“I absolutely believe that it is police action and they are sending saboteurs and provocateurs into peaceful crowds so that they can justify their inhumane treatment of people who are standing up for their right,” she added.

In an interview with Marie Claire, she also claimed that the Portland Police Bureau has “provocateurs” embedded with the demonstrators who are “starting the fires themselves so that they have justification for attacking community members.”

Lovell, who has remained mostly silent throughout the continuing mayhem in Portland, issued a statement saying Hardesty’s claim “strains credulity.”

“I am interested in seeing what evidence she has to support her accusations. I’m disappointed that an elected official would make a statement like this without providing specific facts to support it. This allegation is completely false,” he said.

Turner said Hardesty’s remarks showed she “is part of the problem in Portland.”

“Every one of the many videos we have seen confirms that small groups of rioters are starting the fires and trying to burn down buildings. Even a quick search of Twitter shows rioters setting the fires and boldly claiming responsibility,” he said in a statement.

“I have invited elected officials to stand at the front lines with our officers during protests. Neither Commissioner Hardesty nor any other City Council member has accepted that invitation.”

Pressed on her remarks during the briefing on Thursday, Hardesty admitted that some of the so-called protesters have set fires.

“Have protesters set fires? Yes. But what I know about protesters setting fires is that other protesters have put them out,” she said.

“The police or fire and rescue could not have gone in and put those fires out,” she added.

Hardesty oversees the city’s firefighters. The advocate for defunding the police recently pushed Police Commissioner Ted Wheeler to cede control of the police bureau to her. Wheeler on Monday said he would not do so.
