Cool Compress

Bags under your eyes? Lack of sleep, allergies, salty food, and smoking all can lead to under-eye puffiness. The bags usually mean fluid has collected there. One of the easiest home fixes is a cool compress. Wet a clean cloth with cold water, wring it out, and gently press over your eyes for a few minutes. Do it while sitting, not lying down. Pop the cloth in the fridge or the freezer for extra coldness.

Hemorrhoid Cream

This over-the-counter cream can do more than one thing. It works in part by tightening your skin. So you can use it to treat puffiness under your eyes.  Dab it on like moisturizer. If you find the scent too strong, mix it into your usual moisturizer. Take care not to get it into your eyes. That may cause irritation and even worsen the puffiness.

Drink More Water

Sometimes the solution to puffiness or swelling is more water. When you’re dehydrated, your body’s cells and tissues absorb water and hold onto it. This may lead to puffiness. As you drink up, the cells release the stored-up water and help the swelling subside.

Raise Your Feet

If your feet or ankles are swollen, prop them up to help take the load off. Elevating the swollen areas helps keep fluid from pooling in your lower body parts. This is called edema. It can happen for many reasons, including pregnancy, long days on your feet, or long-distance driving or air travel. Sit with your feet on an ottoman or sofa or lie down with your legs up against the wall. Raise them above your heart.

Raid Your Pantry

Combat the bloated look on your face with teabags. Soak them in warm water, let them cool, and lay them over your eyes. The tea’s caffeine is what helps narrow the blood vessels to lower puffiness. So use black or oolong tea, not herbal ones like peppermint or chamomile. Or try cooled slices of cucumbers, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Cut Salt

It controls the balance of fluid in your body, including the amount of blood. Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure and cause your body to hang on to extra fluid. The sodium in salt pulls water into your blood vessels and enlarges them. This can cause your face, legs, ankles, or feet to swell. Aim to eat no more than 2,000 milligrams of sodium per day. That’s less than a teaspoon of salt.

Sitting or standing still for too long can cause fluid buildup in your legs and other lower parts of your body. Research shows that exercise may chase away the swelling better than rest can. One gentle workout is swimming, which won’t stress your joints. Plus, regular exercise can help lower your weight, which also can help ward off puffiness.

Limit Alcohol

A night of drinking can show up as bloated face, feet, or belly. Alcohol has an inflammatory effect on your body. It’s also a diuretic, which makes you lose water through your pee. In most cases, the swelling goes away in 12 to 24 hours after your body processes the alcohol. Drinking water can help replace lost fluids and reduce puffiness.

Treat Your Allergies

They can trigger puffiness under or around your eyes. Controlling your allergies also may control the swelling. Keep away from your known allergens, such as pollen or mold, as much as possible. Consider a nasal saline rinse, like a neti pot. If you need something stronger, over-the-counter antihistamines may help. Talk to your doctor about what’s best for you.

Try a Massage

It’s not only relaxing but can help banish pregnancy-related swelling. Massage can help the fluid that settles between the tissue flow where it needs to go. You can use your fingertips to knead swollen feet or legs yourself. If a loved one or a friend can do it for you, even better. Massaging muscle and soft tissue not only lowers swelling, but stress, tension, and pain, too.

Prop a Pillow

Try sleeping with an extra pillow tucked under your head. Elevation helps keep fluid from pooling in certain areas, such as under your eyes. Stack the pillows so that they’re high enough to keep your head above your heart without straining your neck.

Inflammation Fighting Foods

Occasional swelling can be a sign of long-term inflammatory disease such as ulcerative colitis. Certain foods can help tamp down inflammation. They include fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats such as monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids, found in salmon and other fatty fish. Other good choices include dark chocolate, green tea, turmeric, and ginger.

They put constant, firm pressure on your feet and ankles to prevent fluid from welling up. Don the socks in the morning and wear them for as long as they’re comfortable. They come in different weights with some socks heavier than others. Start with a lighter pair to try them out.

Ibuprofen or Aspirin

These and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are sold over the counter. They can help lower swelling and any accompanying pain. NSAIDs may cause an upset stomach. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, talk to your doctor before you take them.

Magnesium Supplements

Magnesium is a type of mineral called an electrolyte, which helps balance your sodium levels. Studies show they may lower inflammation as well as puffiness in people who retain a lot of water. A common dosage is 200-400 milligrams a day. If you have a kidney or a heart condition, ask if magnesium supplements are safe for you.

Trump Surging With Hispanic and Black Voters In Critical States

A new Center for American Greatness survey finds President Trump leading Joe Biden in battleground Nevada.

Joe Biden has a problem. Actually, he has a few problems. Recent polling shows that Donald Trump is running much stronger with Hispanics and black voters than he did in 2016. Those are demographic groups that Biden needs to win big if he has any hope of winning the election. If Trump’s strength with these voters continues, it will doom Biden and lead to a second Trump term.

In Florida, an NBC/Marist poll conducted earlier this month showed President Trump with 50 percent of the Hispanic vote to Biden’s 46 percent. In 2016, Clinton won 62 percent of Hispanics compared to 35 percent for Trump. Trump is also outperforming 2016 with black Floridians. The same poll shows him with 11 percent support compared to 8 percent in the last election. If those numbers hold, Florida is simply unwinnable for Biden.

Polling in other states tells a similar story. A poll of 750 likely voters conducted for the Center for American Greatness in Nevada by Rasmussen Reports shows Biden leading Trump by just a single point (49 percent to 48 percent). As in Florida, Trump is running strong with Hispanics, getting 47 percent support to Biden’s 49 percent.

For comparison, Trump got 29 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2016 to Hillary Clinton’s 60 percent. The poll also shows Trump with 41 percent of the black vote. Interestingly, he also ran stronger among bin Nevada in 2016 than he did nationally, so this is a continuation of that trend.

The Nevada survey also shows Trump with a slightly higher favorability rating compared to Biden (48 percent versus 46 percent) which undercuts the narrative that this is a race between a likable Biden and an unlikable Trump. This despite the constant drubbing Trump takes from elite media and the concomitant puffing of Biden. 

Voters already have a fixed opinion of Donald Trump. But it turns out that they have one of Biden, too—and it’s not especially positive.

But it’s the loss of support among groups that historically have backed Democrats in a big way that must be a cause for concern among Democrats. If the trends seen in these polls apply in places like Arizona and North Carolina then the Biden campaign has a very narrow path to victory while Trump’s options increase. Here’s why:

There are essentially two tiers of battleground states. One group consists of Arizona, Florida, and North Carolina. These are all states that Trump won in 2016 that Democrats believe they can win this year. All three states lean Republican, but each has its own story offering Democrats a glimmer of hope.

Arizona, for example, elected a Democratic senator in 2018 for the first time in decades. If Biden can pick off even one of these states then would need to sweep the battleground states in the upper Midwest to win the election. Those states comprise the second group: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Trump won the first three in 2016 but by less than 80,000 votes combined. And he narrowly lost Minnesota.

If Trump holds the states in the first group as he appears likely to do then Biden has to win big in the Midwest—and he can’t lose states that Clinton won by small margins like Nevada (six electoral votes) and New Hampshire (four electoral votes). Clinton only won Nevada by 27,000 votes and New Hampshire by about 2,600. 

As a practical matter, if Arizona, Florida, and North Carolina trend toward Trump over the next month, that would allow the campaign to focus more resources in those Midwestern states that would put him over the top. And it would cause Biden to spend time and money in states like Nevada that he’ll be afraid to lose.

The Center for American Greatness Nevada poll also hints at some further problems for Biden. Even some of his supporters don’t think he’ll win. This suggests an enthusiasm gap favoring the president. 

Only 34 percent of Hispanics and 48 percent of blacks think Biden will win the election. If there is a further break towards one candidate or the other, don’t underestimate voters’ desire to back the one they believe will be the winner.

Enthusiasm counts because it drives donations and activism during the campaign and votes on election day. So the fact that only 66 percent of all Democrats in Nevada believe he will win compared to the 83 percent of Republicans who believe Trump will win points to a problem. 

This is consistent with the enthusiasm gap we’ve seen elsewhere. During the summer, polling by the Center for American Greatness in Florida revealed that 72 percent of Trump voters strongly supported him compared to only 56 percent of Biden’s supporters strongly favoring him.

The fact that President Trump is increasing his support among Hispanic and black voters runs counter to the dominant narrative. But it shouldn’t. He got more votes from those two groups than Romney, McCain, or Bush. This is just a continuation of that trend. If it holds through election day, it will probably mean victory for Donald Trump

RUSH: Meanwhile, in the state of Virginia, there’s an attempt here “to block an outdoor campaign rally for President Trump this evening over COVID concerns. Virginia health officials are seeking to shut down a campaign rally for President Trump Friday night, citing ‘a severe public health threat.’” Pelosi’s out there saying, “Remember, Trump told people to swallow Clorox.”

No, he didn’t. Biden’s out there saying, “I’m not the guy who said to inject bleach.” Trump didn’t say that either. He didn’t say to inject bleach. He didn’t say, “Can we inject bleach? Hey, it would be pretty cool if we could inject bleach,” to Dr. Birx. He did not do or say any of that, and everybody involved in it knows it.
