Every one of us has to please some people now and then. It’s part of most jobs, it’s part of most relationships. But if you find yourself consistently angry at yourself or depressed because you are trying so hard to please others and failing, you may be in the trap of being a people-pleaser.
Why chase the approval of man? Why look to earthly things to fill a void that only Jesus can fill? Why constantly compete to look better than someone else? Someone will always be better at something, more beautiful, or more successful than we are. Rather, we ought to enjoy what God has given us to do and do it to the best of our ability and to God’s glory.
In the end, other people’s opinions of us won’t matter. Our opinion of ourselves won’t matter. God’s opinion is not just an opinion. God’s opinion is truth. And He is the One we should seek to please.
There is nothing wrong with seeking approval. However, we must be careful whose approval we seek. We follow Christ and the approval that He prescribed for us. We seek His approval because He is our approval before the Father (Matthew 10:32-33). We test our approval and seek to mortify any desire that seeks the approval of man. Ultimately, we are left with the approval of the Master, the only approval we should seek. May we do so in all that we do. Seeking His favor, His reception, and His glory!
Let’s each decide to seek God’s approval above the approval of men so we can continue to walk in His calling and fulfill the purpose that He has for our lives. You may be rejected by some, but if you are accepted by One, you have all you need. Stay faithful and seek God’s approval above man’s approval. As a result, you’ll step more into the purpose that God has in your life.
